Mozart: 3 Piano Sonatas K 309, 310 & 311 / Mitsuko Uchida
Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Performer: Mitsuko Uchida
Uni/Philips - #12741 / July 7, 1987

The three sonatas on this disc were all written in 1777-78, and mark Mozart's attainment of a new level of skill and sophistication in his writing for the piano. Uchida's accounts, recorded in 1985, midway through her survey of the composer's complete piano sonatas for Philips, are sympathetic and nicely shaped. Mozart: Favourite Works for Piano / Alfred Brendel
Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Performer: Alfred Brendel
Uni/Philips - #54244 / November 19, 1996

These are admirable accounts of Mozart's sonatas, shapely and cogently argued if a bit straight-laced. While the element of fantasy occasionally takes a back seat to formality in Brendel's approach, there is no lack of animation or affection in his playing, nor any attempt to overstate the emotions of the music. The readings are nicely recorded, with plenty of presence. Brendel's tone never has been much to write home about, but his usual pianistic craftsmanship is much in evidence. --Ted Libbey Read more

Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Uni/Philips - #22517 / May 14, 1991

When it comes to Mozart, Uchida is an unabashed--some would say incorrigible--romantic. But while she can occasionally sound capricious in matters of pacing, articulation, and dynamics, her instincts almost always lead in a felicitous direction. Such is the case with these accounts of the sonatas, recorded between 1983 and 1987. Uchida's approach is unfailingly lyrical, her touch gentle, her tone limpid and bright. Her manner, from one work to the next, may be somewhat undifferentiated, but...Read more
