This is a woman who talks of Jesus and Lucifer like college friends, believes in faeries as a matter of course, and views anyone who lacks her sense of ‘alternate realities’ with great suspicion. This is a woman, and a lyricist, who based the fourteen songs of her last album around the myth of the Egyptian gods Osiris and Isis, and named the disc -- BOYS FOR PELE -- in honour not of the great Brazilian footballer but of a Hawaiian goddess. This is a woman who makes Kate Bush -- with whom, throughout her career, she has been compared -- appear positively grounded. And she is loved for it all by legions of fans, selling out tours without need of a hit single, and dominating cyberspace with perhaps the most Net traffic of any musicians bar The Grateful Dead.
