In 1963, Roberta Joan Anderson -- a struggling painter and art student -- could be found playing folk music in the coffee bars of Toronto for a few dollars. Folk music was the new currency of white middle-class youth at the time, its mixture of naivety and strident Utopianism touching a chord among the disaffected and educated. Mingling light radical protest and acoustic balladry (often rooted in Dust Bowl-era social commentary), it was a style that proved a perfect vehicle for Anderson’s blossoming talents as a singer and guitarist.
