Brad Roberts, linchpin and songwriter of Crash Test Dummies, formed the offbeat collective as a low-key bar band hustling covers of favourite hits, with no initial ambitions beyond huddling indoors playing music during Canada’s harsh winters. Appalled by his singing voice, he concentrated on guitar until told by a singing teacher that he possessed a perfect bass-baritone range, whereupon he took on the role of rumbling vocalist. A lo-fi demo of original compositions -- recorded while he was an English literature/philosophy student -- courted enough attention to whip up a record-company bidding war. This was encouragement enough to divert Roberts from his intended academic career and flesh out the band’s personnel to include Michel Dorge (drums), Ellen Reid (backing vocals/keyboards/accordion), Benjamin Darvill (harmonica/mandolin) and Dan Roberts (bass).
