The Beastie Boys first appeared on the scene as talentless, sniggering, bratty punks. Helped out, no doubt, by the fact that they had parents ‘in the bizz’, they played Max’s Kansas City, CBGBs and the like with bands such as Bad Brains and Influence. In the beginning, there was POLLYWOG STEW; an indie EP release on the not terribly wellknown Ratcage label (re-issued in 1993) -- its eight tracks caused only minor ripples in and around New York. Then came “Cookie Puss”, a pre-Jerky Boys crank call (the Cookie Puss of the title is a heavily advertised ice-cream novelty) heard over amateurish hardcore bashing.
